Hoe Tonga collaborates with College Sport Wellington to facilitate the offering of waka ama in secondary schools.
To this end, Hoe Tonga organises the Regional Secondary Schools Champs (RSSC) in March each year, approximately two weeks prior to the National Secondary Schools Champs (NSSC), organised by Waka Ama New Zealand. Detailed information, including entry deadlines, are notified on www.hoetonga.co.nz (for RSSC) and www.wakaama.co.nz (for NSCC).
A number of entities, including clubs within the Hoe Tonga region, work with schools to offer waka ama.
Teams from various schools in the region have previously competed at both regional and national events. This includes Aotea College, Te Kura-a-iwi o Whaktupuanga Rua Mao, Mana College, Te Kura Maori o Porirua, Otaki College, Wellington East Girls’ College, Porirua College, Rongotai College, and Wellington Girls’ College.
If you are interested in waka ama at your local schools, please contact your school’s local sports coordinator or get in touch at hoetonga@gmail.com.
