Schools overview

Hoe Tonga collaborates with College Sport Wellington and KiwiSport to facilitate the offering of waka ama in secondary schools.

To this end, Hoe Tonga organises the Regional Secondary Schools Champs (RSSC) in March each year, approximately 2 weeks prior to the National Secondary Schools Champs (NSSC), organised by Waka Ama New Zealand. Detailed information, including entry deadlines, are notified on www.hoetonga.co.nz (for RSSC) and www.wakaama.co.nz (for NSCC).

Hoe Tonga’s Regional Development Office, Mataiawhea Te Kere assists a number of entities such as clubs in the Hoe Tonga region to promote the sport throughout the province.

Teams from various schools in the region have participated in the sport of Waka Ama, competing in National and Regional events. Both these levels have seen an increase in participation throughout the years from students and schools reaching 16 participating schools at the 2018 Regional Secondary School Champs and a number of schools actively involved in Waka Ama without competing. .

If you are interested in waka ama at your local schools, please contact your school’s local sports coordinator or get in touch with the Regional Development Officer on 0221037755.
