Daylight saving – Be seen on the water!

If you’re training on the water or training from 5pm onwards in the evening you need to be taking out with you your white night light so you can be seen.    Already I’ve seen this is not happening on the harbour.

To promote and ensure others have the opportunity I’m keen to coordinate an order of these lights, I’ve mounted mine for W6 use on an old sun umbrella stalk and lash it to the kiato, works great.

Please feel free to circulate to clubs / club members – I strongly urge you to.   I’ll look to place an order in a week’s time but will be looking for payment prior.   If interested let me know and I’ll place provide you with the necessary info to deposit monies to secure an order.

Volunteer of the month – Congratulations Roimata Tauroa

Roimata has supported Tunui a Te Ika Outrigger Canoe Club based at Oriental Bay as a member, paddler, secretary, coach and is always first to put her hand up to coordinate and assist with all club activities.
Recently Roimata trained two NZ Post corporate teams, attended and volunteered at Waka Ama NZ National Sprint competition at Karapiro,  facilitated overseas Dragon Boat team experience and has coordinated open days for the club in collaboration with the Ocean Water Sports Programme at Royal Port Nicholson Yacht Club.

Sport Wellington’s Sport Development Advisor Jamie Milne says “inspirational people like Roimata are why we have the Logan Brown Volunteer of the Month award to recognize them. Roimata does all this activity without reimbursement and takes annual leave to ensure Waka Ama is promoted and developed – what an inspirational volunteer and person for our region!”

Roimata will receive a voucher for Logan Brown Restaurant for a tasting options. Logan Brown Restaurant is synonymous with excellence and service; values which align closely with the positive aspects of volunteering and coaching.

Well done Roimata (pictured below at Waitangi Day celebrations)

Tere’s story – Mates Paddle for Life Update

E Tere, moe atu, moe atu, moe atu raa.

Unfortuately Tere lost his battle with cancer and passed away on Monday 27 February early morning. Hoe Tonga sends regards and deepest sympathy to Numa and whanau at this time and acknowledge the enduring contribution that Tere and his family have made to our waka ama whanau.

The Mates Paddle for Life course has been altered and will be held at Oriental Bay on Friday but will still go ahead. Please check out the Mates for Life Website for further updates and background:  www.matespaddleforlife.com

Numa has a set group of paddlers from the old days that will do a 2km course from fountain to the light house on the point.  They will start at 6am, Friday and do this 48 times (the age of Tere). They will rotate the select group between the kukupa and the sister waka at Tunui.

If any paddlers would like to participate on Friday please organise your own waka (w6 or w1 or w2) any form of vessel and support them by going around the course. If you just want to go down and watch and support on Friday thats all good too.
