Hikoikoi Matariki Challenge Results

After a week of turbulent southerlies a fantastic day greeted our paddlers from Wanganui, Wairarapa and Wellington for our Hikoikoi Matariki Challenge 2012 held on Sunday 1 July at Hikoikoi Waka Ama Club in Petone.  Thanks to all our volunteers, paddlers and supporters who helped make this first waka ama regatta hosted by Hikoikoi Waka Ama a huge success, particularly Karena and Jack, Marinna, Alaena Dixon, Sharlene Winiata and Vicki Hollywell. Support boat crew of Roger Hollywell, Mia Kamo, Andrew Dodds, Holden Hohaia and Rowdy from Wellington Ocean Sports Centre (Royal Port Nicholson Yacht Club) we couldnt have done this without you.

Thanks also to our sponsors of trophies: Hutt City Council, Wellington Tenths Development Trust, Wellington Tenths Trust, Palmerston North Maori Reserve, Te Wharewaka o Poneke and Port Nicholson Block Settlement Trust. A fantastic celebration of Matariki by mana whenua and manuhiri.

Spot prizes were provided by Mojo, Wellington Ocean Sports Centre, Whittakers, SHOTT, Hikoikoi Manaia Weavers, Toni Huata and Wild Winds. Thanks also to Hutt City Council and Corrections who arranged the clearing of driftwood from the beach in time for the event.

It was great to see the Stand up Paddle Boards at this event and we expect more to come out to Petone in the summer months for our twilight series.
