Schedule and lane draw now available: Regional Secondary School Sprint Champs 2016

Note: Based on the weather forecast for Saturday, wind conditions appear acceptable. As at 17 March 2016, at 8:40pm, the event is scheduled to go ahead.

Summary

  • Host: Hoe Tonga Pacifica Waka Ama Association
  • Venue: Onepoto, Porirua
  • Date: 19 March 2016 (reserve date: 20 March)
  • Events: W1 250, W6 250m and 500m
  • Divisions: J16 and J19
  • $15 per paddler
  • Entries close on Tuesday, 15 March. There will be no late entries. Entries can only be done by each school’s sports coordinator.

Ice Water Paddler Series 2016

Yep, it’s not long to go before it will dark early again, the water temperature plummets, and it gets a littler harder to get the motivation to get out on the water. But there is help on the way. Come along to the Ice Water Paddler Series, for both W1 and surf skis, to get that extra little bit of intensity into your training session.

When and where:

  • Race 1: Saturday, 16 April – Ngati Toa Domain, Porirua
  • Race 2: Sunday, 3 July – Petone (Motorway end)
  • Race 3: Sunday, 24 July – Dolly Varden beach at Paremata Bridge OR Ngati Toa domain, Porirua
  • Race 4: Sunday, 21 August – Petone (Motorway end)

Venues may change based on weather forecast, this will be confirmed the day before the race via http://www.hoetonga.co.nz.

Time: meet at 9am, race start at 10am

Distance: ~10km

Cost: $5 pp (pay on the day) and your enthusiasm

Purpose: Spice up your water training session! This event is primarily about participation, catching up with your paddling mates, and getting that extra intensity into your training session by racing against others.

Safety: Paddlers are to ensure that they carry all necessary safety gear such as life jackets, leg rope and bailers as per Waka Ama New Zealand race rules and are trained in self-rescue techniques! There will not be any support boats. However, the course will be set to ensure safe paddling conditions. Events may be postponed if wind speed exceeds 25knots.

Paddling craft: Open to all single or double outrigger canoes and surf ski. No W6. If you wish to race W6, please compete in the Hoe Tonga W6 Paddla Series (details to come shortly).

Notices and results: announced on the Hoe Tonga website at www.hoetonga.co.nz. Results are posted within three days of the event. There won’t be any prizes. Where available, we will post photos.

Board nominees

Please find below profiles of the nominees (in alphabetical order) for the upcoming Board elections (11 April 2016). There are five nominees, and there are five available positions. Please click on each name to download the profile.

At the Special General Meeting there will be an opportunity for clubs to meet all candidates, prior to the elections taking place.

At the SGM there will also be an opportunity for clubs to discuss any issues with the incoming Board, to help the new Board get an initial understanding of what’s important to clubs and paddlers in the region.

 

Special General Meeting to elect Board members, on 11 April

A Special General Meeting will take place on 11 April, 6.30 to 8pm, at the Police College in Porirua.

The only formal agenda item is the election of Hoe Tonga’s new Board, in line with the recent changes to Hoe Tonga’s constitution and structure. However, there will also be an opportunity for clubs to get to know, and discuss issues with, the candidates.

All affiliated clubs (up to 2 executive officers from each club) are invited to attend. Other individual club members are welcome to attend, however please contact Hoe Tonga to ensure sufficient room capacity.

There will be a separate notice to introduce all nominees.

Are you interested in becoming a Hoe Tonga Board member?

Hoe Tonga is calling for nominations for 5 elected Board members. Due to the busy lead up to Nationals and the busy holiday period, the deadline has been extended to 31 January 2016.

The process is as follows:

  • Nominations can be made by Member Clubs. You can nominate any individual. Nominees do not need be a member/paddler of your club or region.
  • We are seeking Board members who will take an active involvement in the sport’s governance body and in the best interests of its membership as a whole. All nominees must be honest, reliable, trustworthy and comfortable to ‘walk and talk’, particularly in relation to the values of our sport (as outlined in our Strategic Plan)
  • Club must fill in the nomination form (click here to download). They must be received, complete with relevant nominee profile and references, by 31 January 2016, at hoetonga@gmail.com. The list of nominees, along with their profiles, will be posted on the Hoe Tonga website.
  • Elections will take place by secret ballot at a Special General Meeting as soon as possible in 2016 (date yet to be confirmed). For further information please contact the Hoe Tonga administrator or executive officers.

I am pleased to announce the selection of the following paddlers who will represent Hoe Tonga in the Regional Premier W12 at National Sprints 2016, in line with the policy as discussed and agreed at Hoe Tonga Regional Committee meeting on 3 August 2015 http://www.hoetonga.co.nz/?p=5094

There may be an opportunity for both teams to have a training prior to Nationals and it will be the role of the appointed Team Captain/s to organise and notify paddlers of any training. The race itself is scheduled as a straight final at Nationals and it is the responsibility of the Team Captain to arrange paddlers seating in the W12 on the day if no prior training run has been undertaken. The Regional Committee will endeavour to obtain a uniform for this race/team representing Hoe Tonga in consultation with the Team Captain/s.

Quota holders for W1 at Nationals 2016

The ranking of W1 paddlers and Hoe Tonga quota list for W1 at Nationals 2016 is now available.

Notice to club reps: If any of the quota holders DO NOT intend to race at Nationals 2016, please advise Hoe Tonga as soon as possible, so that the next eligible person can move up into a quota spot. Please contact hoetonga@gmail.com.

Results and photos for W1 events for Hoe Tonga Regionals 2015

What a great day for W1 racing at Henley Lake in Masterton. Warm and sunny all day! Winds were reasonably strong for some of the events later in the day, especially the 250m dash, but with Henley Lake being a small lake, it did not affect paddling negatively. In fact, it was the first time ever that we were able to run a Midget W1 race (6-10 years old).

A big thank you to Wairarapa Waka Ama Canoe Club, based at Henley Lake, for hosting this event, and providing a significant number of volunteers to set up the lane system and help run the event on the day.

We also had a new and fully surveyed lane system in action (100% accurate), partly enabled by a funding contribution from the Trust House Foundation. A special thank you to Matt Archer for helping set up the race course on Friday.

Racing was extremely competitive in the many divisions. Full results for both days are available here, the results for the W1 events can be found here.

With 140 points, Porirua Canoe and Kayak Club took out the Club Excellence Award for the third year in a row. Congratulations, a great effort. Full club award results are available here.

For the James Hapeta Club Spirit Award (eg entries in on time, team managers organised, consistent use of uniforms, good attitude, ready to lend a hand, etc, etc), it ended up being a tight race between Porirua Canoe and Kayak Club and Wairarapa Waka Ama Canoe Club. Congratulations to this year’s winner Wairarapa Waka Ama Canoe Club, in recognition of their significant efforts to make this year’s W1 events at  Henley Lake a reality.
