Results for Regionals 2013: W6 and W1 (including selection for Nationals 2014)

A big thanks to all paddlers, supporters and hard-working volunteers for making it a great weekend. It has been a record year, with 9 out of 12 clubs and over 400 paddlers competing.

As usual, it was far from calm, throwing in some challenging conditions especially for W1 paddlers. However, these are the sorts of conditions we are seeing every year, and they will hold paddlers in good steed as they prepare for Nationals 2014.

The “Club Excellence Award”, in which clubs accumulated points for 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th placings (4, 3, 2, and 1 point respectively), was won by Porirua Canoe Kayak Club with over 140 points. Congratulations!

Also up for grabs was the “James Hapeta Club Spirit Award”. Denise Hapeta presented the trophy and offered some inspiring words, and we are sure James would have enjoyed the day as much as we did. A number of factors were considered as officials decided on the winner, including (but not limitied to) how organised the club was before and during the event, whether waiver forms were completed, whether paddlers wore their correct uniforms, and whether they offered assistance where needed. There was a tight battle between Hikoikoi Waka Club, Tai Tonga 41 OCC, and Porirua Canoe Kayak Club to take out this trophy. Congratulations to Tai Tonga 41 OCC as the 2013 winner.

Photos of the event will be posted within the next few days here on our website and flickr.com, they will again be freely available.

With regard to selection, please download the following file that shows the rankings of paddlers for each division.

Note:

With regard to the regional “mixed” WT12, further information will be posted shortly. Note that Waka Ama NZ’s policy stipulates that those paddlers taking part in the Premier Regional WT12 and/or the W1 Dash races cannot take part in the “mixed” WT12.

Dark greenish blue Surfrigger found

On Friday morning (5.30am) I found a greenish blue Surfrigger, without ama and kiatos, floating in the channel near the Mana Yachtclub. I put it next to the Mana canoe (southwestern end of ngati toa domain) as its not clear who it belongs to.

Important notice: schedules and lane draws for Regional Champs (14/15 Dec)

The Regional Sprint Champs are now scheduled to go ahead this weekend, but please expect relatively strong winds between 15 and 20knots.

Please find below the updated schedules and lane draws for both days. There have been some minor changes (eg some withdrawals, a couple of teams such as Master Women W6 500m have been combined with the Open Women).

Important notice:

Due to the stronger winds on Sunday, we are planning to run some W1 events (Intermediate and J16) on Saturday afternoon, in between the W6 events, exact timing to be confirmed but likely after 2.30pm. This affects W1 races 01-06 and W1 races 09, 11, 13 & 14. This means that Saturday is likely to be a long day, but Sunday will be shorter as a result, with an approximate lunch time finish on Sunday.

W6 (Saturday)

W1 (Sunday)

  • Schedule (Note: W1 Int and J16 races to be run on Saturday 14 Dec, exact times to be confirmed, but likely Saturday) afternoon)
  • Lane draw

Club reps and team managers:

Please come to registration asap in the morning. Note that all paddlers (or their parents/caregivers) must sign an event waiver form. Please hand in the signed form at Registration on race day, this is a prerequisite before teams and paddlers are able to race.

Also please make yourself available for a team managers briefing at approximately 8.30 at Registration.

Important notice to clubs: regional WT12 (inter-club) entries for Nationals

For those clubs that have paddlers that wish to compete in a WT12 at Nationals 2014, but do not have enough to make up a WT12 within their own club, Waka Ama NZ offers the possibility for two clubs to combine to form a regioinal WT12 (refer to rule 21.7 in the NKOA race rules).

Relevant entries must be made by the region, and Hoe Tonga has an established process in order to make those entries.

Click here to download the document outlining this process.

If your club wishes to make an entry, your club must follow this process and the proposed entry must be received at hoetonga@gmail.com no later than 14 December 2013.

Received entries will be processed by the Hoe Tonga administrator (or any Executive Officer if required).

Note:

  • The fact that Waka Ama NZ allows regional “inter-club” WT12 entries does not mean that your club can form a more competitive WT12 by leaving out paddlers from within your club that would otherwise be eligible to compete in your WT12. You MUST first use all eligible paddlers from within your club. Note that at Nationals 2013 some entries were later found to be illegitimate and had to be withdrawn.
  • It is the clubs’ responsibility to ensure that the entries that they submit are legitimate. Club executive approval is required. While Hoe Tonga makes every effort to check that the proposed WT12 entry is legitimate, we are constrained in terms of our time and resources, so acceptance of an entry on our behalf does not mean that the entry is legitimate.
  • Regionally selected WT12 (Premier Men and Women only) are determined through a different process, please refer to the the race information package for the Regional Sprint Championships 2013.

Coaches and clubs please remember to send along your volunteers to assist and ensure paddlers have all the hoe and lifejackets they need to compete. For some clubs this may mean sharing resources during the morning.

Dont forget the winner of the Championship Final will be offered the chance to compete at the 25th National Waka ama Sprints in Karapiro, January and there is a prize donated by Hoe Tonga for the ‘Best Dressed Team’ Xmas theme as judged by our photographer from RENARDFX Stephen Fox.
