RESULTS – NZ Post Group Corporate Waka Ama Challenge

What a  fantastic day, great racing, great food, not so great weather and the only casualty a flying gazebo which fell victim to the Southerly experienced in Wellington on Sunday.

A huge thanks to all those who took part in this fantastic initiative by New Zealand Post and Waka Ama New Zealand. There were 7 clubs in the Wellington region who undertook to train 11 teams of paddlers over the space of approx 4 weeks and they all did a fantastic job.

Special mention must be made to all our volunteers on the day but particularly to Tunui a te Ika Waka Ama Club who turned out in force on their home turf to assist. Thanks to Tai Tonga 41 club members made the trek from Evans Bay in 25 knot Southerly and Porirua Canoe and Kayak Club  supplied two waka along with Hikoikoi Sports and Culture Club. Other key positions were Chris Fox, Race Director and Coordinator, Marinna Millanta-Lowrey and Paula Dixon who managed the finish line and results and Karmen Wallace and team who did a fantastic job as always on Loading Bay. Thanks also to Royal Port Nicholson Yacht Club and Heretaunga Boating Club who supported us on the water.

The winners on the day were North City Te Waka Toa who posted fairly impressive times during the morning and looked pretty sharp. Our winner of the spot prize for best dressed team was Hondo. There was plenty of festive cheer with a Santa coming out on his waka as well….Race_Results

Well done to all the NZ Post Group teams and we hope you continue your waka ama journey. Hoe Tonga Waka Ama wishes you all a safe and merry Christmas.

Results and survey W1 Sprints, 10 Dec 2011

Very good conditions today, again a big thank you to all volunteers, and thanks to the New Zealand Police for the use of the caravan, Whitby Estates for the use of the marquee, and Te Wananga Maori for the use of chairs and tables.

Click here to download the full results.

The quota table will be out in the next two days, but you should be able to establish from the race results whether you made the quota or not. Where there are 5 or fewer quota places, the placings in the champ final determine the ranking. Where there are more than 5 quota places, placings in the plate final or times in the heats will be used to determine additional rankings.

Where people withdrew or did not show, these will go on the waiting list if all quota places are filled. Where quota places are available, those on the waiting list will automatically fill any available spots.

If you do not intend to race W1 at Nationals and you are on the quota, please let us know asap at hoetonga@gmail.com

Before you go, we would appreciate approximately 5 min of your time to answer a few questions about the W1 and W6 Sprints 2011.

Many thanks
