I’m seeking a crew and therefore a Club to train with during Winter and for the lead up to the 2015 Sprint Nationals
I’m based in Whanganui but can and will travel for any crew training sessions held on the Friday evenings or any time Saturday and Sunday.
My availability for additional sessions can and will increase as we head closer towards Regionals and Nationals.
I’d prefer a crew that’s Auahi Kore and/or located north of Wellington (to minimise commutes)
I’m happy to serve as a reserve paddler and team/club support person/volunteer as i also intend to train for V1 regional qualification
Please contact: Garfield Toro
garfieldtoro@gmail.com
There have been no visible or publicised signs of other Master men training in Whanganui, so I’m reaching out to the region.

Fantastic day waka ama whanau….celebrating Matariki in style! This is what Matariki is all about – doing the things you love with whanau, friends and supporters.
Thanks to all our fabulous volunteers that made this event a success, we could’nt do this without you and the support of our community, learning new skills on and off the water.
Waka ama at Hikoikoi and Hoe Tonga looks healthy with 170+ paddlers taking to the water and another 50+ supporting and catching up on the beach – fantastic atmosphere.
Thanks to the coaches and managers who share their knowledge and educate our rangatahi – the next generation of paddlers.
SUP, Surfski, Kayak, Waka ama, Support Boats from Muritai Yacht Club, Royal Port Nicholson Yacht Club, Peter Humphries and Grant Nalder Harbour Master – Fantastic effort from you all………………
Thanks to John Hodges (PCKC) and Ora Toa for their support in getting waka to our venue at The Wellington Tenths Trust & Palmerston North Maori Reserve Trust and Hikoikoi Waka ama Club in Petone.
Coastguard Boating Education Courses Underway Next Week
With these shorter cooler days now is the perfect time of the year to get into the classroom and formalise your boating education. Wellington Ocean Sports is a Coastguard Boating Education accredited provider and has several courses available for you to consider.
Day Skipper
The very popular Coastguard Boating Education course “Day Skipper” is again being offered at Wellington Ocean Sports. Day Skipper is a 15 hour theory only course that is applicable to all water users. No experience is necessary to attend the course, but it is also ideal for those with boating experience who have never undertaken formal boating education.
Day Skipper leads on to New Zealand’s most widely recognised boating qualification “Boatmaster” and then to the prestigious “Coastal Skipper” qualification. Day Skipper covers the following topics – boats and equipment, navigation, rules and regulations, emergencies and basic knots.
Our next Day Skipper course is commencing on Tuesday 3 June runs on Tuesday and Thursday evenings from 5.30 to 8.30pm.
Boatmaster
For those wanting to move to the next level Boatmaster is for you. The Boatmaster course is a 30-hour, theory-only course providing in-depth knowledge of all aspects of boating safety. Whilst this is an excellent stand-alone course, the Boatmaster course is also a pre-requisite for the ‘Coastal Skipper’ course.
Our next Boatmaster course commences on Wednesday 4 June and runs over Monday and Wednesday evenings from 5.30 to 8.30pm
VHF Radio Operator
Wellington Ocean Sports next VHF Radio Operator course is running over the evenings of 15 and 17 July from 5.30 to 8.30pm and there are still several places available for booking. This 6-hour, theory-only course including exam, provides the necessary knowledge required to obtain the “Marine VHF Operator Qualification”.
This is the minimum qualification required for anyone to legally operate a fixed or hand-held marine VHF Radio. We recommend adding on the MROC qualification, which is only an extra half hour, allowing you to operate HF SSB long range radio equipment.
If you have any queries feel free to give me a call in the office on 939 6702 or via email at ocean@rpnyc.org.nz
