W1 rudderless workshop to help Joern get to Te Aito in July

Joern is looking to compete at Te Aito on 19 July, in Papeete, Tahiti. It’s the biggest and most prestigious W1 long distance race in the world, attracting over 600 paddlers in the mens division alone.

In order to help him get there (and bring back the insights from competing against the best), he is fundraising via pledgeme.co.nz. In turn he pledges to run a workshop in August (date tbc) for those paddlers and supporters helping him get to Te Aito. He will share insights into his journey in W1 rudderless paddling over the last few years, with a particular focus on paddling technique: forward stroke, paddle steering, and paddling in ocean and downwind conditions.

Click here to find out more and if you like what you see pass it on to your friends and colleagues. Also check out the other rewards for helping him out.

For Sale: W1 Maui Kanu Aito (has been sold)

Lei has a W1 Maui Kanu Aito 2013 (with rudder) for sale.

High quality hand laminated carbon. It is in great condition apart from a couple of scratches (cosmetic) at the rear on the deck and on the front side of the ama. There was an accident where a vehicle reversed into the waka while it was on top of a car and the rear hull and deck had some cracks in it. But Maui Kanu fixed it and it is like it had never happened.

It comes with a black spray skirt and a yellow cover that was never used, it also has a paddle clip for a blade length of 50″. Selling on as Lei bought a sit-on-top outrigger canoe.

$4,000 or make an offer by 20 May.

Please contact Lei at leiseanef@gmail.com or on 021-243 7727. If you would like to take it for a paddle or have a closer inspection this is not a problem, she is based in Porirua (Wellington).

‘Day Skipper’ Course

Day Skipper

Day Skipper” course that we will be running from 5 May over Monday and Wednesday evenings.

Day Skipper is a course designed for recreational water users. No experience is necessary and it comes highly recommended for all those involved in, or considering becoming involved in recreational boating of any description.

The very popular “Boatmaster” course tends to appeal to seasoned boaties who are interested in more detailed navigation, weather, lights, bouyage and beacons. However Day Skipper is ideal for all water users as it covers the basic safety  considerations everyone needs to be aware of including – water craft and equipment, weather, emergencies, rules and regulations, basic navigation and knots.
