A huge thank you to all those who volunteered at this year’s Regional W6 Sprints. Some new faces helped support those who have supported the region at many of the events over the year.

With the 2012 New Zealand Post National Long Distance Championships to be held in Hoe Tonga in April 2012 it is a good time to start learning what the different roles involve and volunteer time is always appreciated in non-profit organisations such as ours.

Jörn Scherzer – Race Director/ Marinna Millanta-Lowrey – Finish Line/Karmen Wallace – pre load/Selena Katene and Ronnie Thomas – Registration/Matt Archer & John Hodges – support boats/Daniel Haenga on the microphone…. awesome work.

Photos and video from Waka Te Tasman race in Kaiteriteri, 12 Nov

Another great year for the Waka Te Tasman race in Kaiteriteri on 11/12 November, it is one of the best organised and best value-for-money races in the country. The venue again delivered excellent racing conditions.

Paddlers and teams from the South Island, Wellington, and Napier were represented. Five clubs from the Wellington region attended the race this year: Tunui, Mana Pasifika, Kokiri, Hikoikoi, and Porirua Canoe and Kayak Club.

Here some photos and videos from Team Makaira. (You can download the full size photos by going to the set on flickr.com.)

With entries closing on 18 November Hoe Tonga will then know who is registered and requiring training sessions.
Clubs who express an interest in coaching and working with a NZ Post Team will receive a list of teams in their respective locations therefore making it logistically possible to train effectively.

The winning teams from each region will compete at the National Waka Ama Sprint Championships being held at Karapiro in January 2012.

Porirua Multi-Sports Day, 12 Nov, Onepoto

“HAVE A GO” AT WATER SPORTS ON PORIRUA HARBOUR
Have a go at kayaking, jet skiing, canoeing, sailing, waka ama, power boating and more on Porirua Harbour next weekend when the Porirua Multi-Water Sport Family Day takes place – and it’s all free!

Council’s Sport, Leisure and Recreation Portfolio leaders Councillors Denys Latham and Litea Ah Hoi say the day is an opportunity for locals and others from the Wellington region to try their hand at new water sports.

“The day will help promote the many different water sports we enjoy here in Porirua and hopefully get more people active and fit in an enjoyable way,” says Cllr Latham.

He says many water sports clubs use Porirua Harbour and surrounding coastline for their recreation and water sports events.  These include boating, canoeing, jet skiing, kayaking, surf life saving, power boating, rowing, sea scouts, sailing, stand-up paddling, surfing, waka ama, water skiing and yachting.

Cllr Ah Hoi says most of the water sport clubs will be present on the day.

“There are about 12 clubs or organisations participating and the Council is keen to encourage residents to be more active as individuals and as families by making use of the recreational facilities we have in the city.  Getting people to be more active in their lives provides the opportunity to focus more on ‘quality family time’ and help alleviate the social and health issues that currently has an impact in Porirua.”

Each club will be given 30 minutes to highlight their sports and provide the public with the opportunity to ‘have a go’.

The Porirua Multi-Water Sport Family Day will take place from 9am-2pm on Saturday 12 November on Porirua Harbour. The event will be based at the Onepoto Park side of the Porirua Harbour in Titahi Bay.

Whanganui River Challenge (formerly 4 Bridges Race), 29/30 Oct, Whanganui

Now in its third year, the Whanganui River Challenge 2011 is shaping up to be the best yet. To be held on the 29 and 30 October 2011 to coincide with ideal tide conditions and formerly named the 4 Bridges River Race, this iconic river event attracts competitors from all over the country in a multitude of craft including kayaks (single and double), ocean skis, rowing doubles and quads, waka ama OC1/OC6, surf skis, surf lifesaving canoes, outriggers, and open Canadian canoes.

With over 120 competitors racing over two days we believe this event has huge potential to put Wanganui on the sporting map . The Wanganui Multisport and Triathlon Club in partnership with the Wanganui Events Trust is developing plans to increase the number of competitors on the water and spectators on the bank and further cement this in the ‘must do’ category  of national sporting events.

Entries and detailed information at www.riverchallenge.co.nz.

Entries close Wednesday 26th October so still plenty of time to get training especially with daylight savings underway. Individual and team entries are welcome and we have great place-getter and spot prizes up for grabs.

Any questions on the event please feel free to email or call and Event Director, Aaron Cox, can be contacted on 027 420 5577.
