A special thanks to those paddlers that generously gave koha to support our PCKC paddlers who have been selected to represent NZ in Canada in August at the World Waka Ama Sprint Championships. Your warm support is greatly appreciated.

The next race in the series will be held on Sunday 24 June here in Porirua at  Onepoto again. Registrations will open at 9.15am with a race start at 10.00am. Hope to see you all there!

Results and photos for LDN 2012

Fantastic conditions and some tight racing made it an exciting LDN 2012. Only 5 seconds separated the 1st and 2nd place in the W6 Men race. The women had to battle some challenging conditions on Saturday, with a couple of capsizes as well.

In the W1 race on Sunday, the last 500m coming up the channel proved decisive in a number of cases depending on what paddlers took, due to the strong outgoing tide.

Hoe Tonga and Waka Ama NZ would like to thank all paddlers, volunteers, supporters and sponsors who made the LDN 2012 a great success. A special thanks to Chris Fox who led the organisation of the event for Hoe Tonga.

RESULTS – NZ Post Group Corporate Waka Ama Challenge

What a  fantastic day, great racing, great food, not so great weather and the only casualty a flying gazebo which fell victim to the Southerly experienced in Wellington on Sunday.

A huge thanks to all those who took part in this fantastic initiative by New Zealand Post and Waka Ama New Zealand. There were 7 clubs in the Wellington region who undertook to train 11 teams of paddlers over the space of approx 4 weeks and they all did a fantastic job.

Special mention must be made to all our volunteers on the day but particularly to Tunui a te Ika Waka Ama Club who turned out in force on their home turf to assist. Thanks to Tai Tonga 41 club members made the trek from Evans Bay in 25 knot Southerly and Porirua Canoe and Kayak Club  supplied two waka along with Hikoikoi Sports and Culture Club. Other key positions were Chris Fox, Race Director and Coordinator, Marinna Millanta-Lowrey and Paula Dixon who managed the finish line and results and Karmen Wallace and team who did a fantastic job as always on Loading Bay. Thanks also to Royal Port Nicholson Yacht Club and Heretaunga Boating Club who supported us on the water.

The winners on the day were North City Te Waka Toa who posted fairly impressive times during the morning and looked pretty sharp. Our winner of the spot prize for best dressed team was Hondo. There was plenty of festive cheer with a Santa coming out on his waka as well….Race_Results

Well done to all the NZ Post Group teams and we hope you continue your waka ama journey. Hoe Tonga Waka Ama wishes you all a safe and merry Christmas.

Results and survey W1 Sprints, 10 Dec 2011

Very good conditions today, again a big thank you to all volunteers, and thanks to the New Zealand Police for the use of the caravan, Whitby Estates for the use of the marquee, and Te Wananga Maori for the use of chairs and tables.

Click here to download the full results.

The quota table will be out in the next two days, but you should be able to establish from the race results whether you made the quota or not. Where there are 5 or fewer quota places, the placings in the champ final determine the ranking. Where there are more than 5 quota places, placings in the plate final or times in the heats will be used to determine additional rankings.

Where people withdrew or did not show, these will go on the waiting list if all quota places are filled. Where quota places are available, those on the waiting list will automatically fill any available spots.

If you do not intend to race W1 at Nationals and you are on the quota, please let us know asap at hoetonga@gmail.com

Before you go, we would appreciate approximately 5 min of your time to answer a few questions about the W1 and W6 Sprints 2011.

Click here to take the survey!

Many thanks
Hoe Tonga

A huge thank you to all those who volunteered at this year’s Regional W6 Sprints. Some new faces helped support those who have supported the region at many of the events over the year.

With the 2012 New Zealand Post National Long Distance Championships to be held in Hoe Tonga in April 2012 it is a good time to start learning what the different roles involve and volunteer time is always appreciated in non-profit organisations such as ours.

Jörn Scherzer – Race Director/ Marinna Millanta-Lowrey – Finish Line/Karmen Wallace – pre load/Selena Katene and Ronnie Thomas – Registration/Matt Archer & John Hodges – support boats/Daniel Haenga on the microphone…. awesome work.

Ron Sederal, Paula Dixon, Chris Manson and the team from Wanganui – thanks for your time and effort. To all the others that helped on the day….. our rangatahi and parents what an awesome effort and fantastic day.

Also a big thank you to the New Zealand Police for the use of their caravan (finish/results) and to Whitby Estates for the use of their large marquee (registration). In addition to this thanks to Te Wananga o Aotearoa for the tables and chairs………awesome.

Please let us know if you are able to help out again at the W1 event on Saturday 10 December by emailing hoetonga@gmail.com

Photos and video from Waka Te Tasman race in Kaiteriteri, 12 Nov

Another great year for the Waka Te Tasman race in Kaiteriteri on 11/12 November, it is one of the best organised and best value-for-money races in the country. The venue again delivered excellent racing conditions.

Paddlers and teams from the South Island, Wellington, and Napier were represented. Five clubs from the Wellington region attended the race this year: Tunui, Mana Pasifika, Kokiri, Hikoikoi, and Porirua Canoe and Kayak Club.

Here some photos and videos from Team Makaira. (You can download the full size photos by going to the set on flickr.com.)
