Team MAKAIRA-INTERISLANDER wins Waka Te Tasman in Kaiteriteri

Proudly supported by the INTERISLANDER, Team Makaira-Interislander (Mana Pasifika OCC) won the Waka Te Tasman W6 Open Men at Kaiteriteri on the weekend. Local team Motueka Men, winner of the race for the last three years, came second in a gripping and neck-to-neck race. Makaira retained the upper hand in all three stages of the event.

A big thank you to Chris Fox, coach of Team Makaira, for the outstanding support and patience in the build up to this race and on the day, and for making this win a reality. Team Makaira is now headed to Vaka Eiva in Rarotonga (19-25 Nov).

Kaiteriteri again delivered fantastic weather conditions. The organisers put on a great event with excellent catering. This has to be one of the most well organised and best value-for-money events in New Zealand.

Mana Island Challenge 2010: results and photos

Kia Orana Koutou Katoatoa,

The Mana Island Challenge was held in variable conditions on Saturday 28 August but this didn’t dampen the spirits of those who attended the inaugural event.

The W6 race took place in the morning first with six waka competing in the 20km course.

First and second place was hotly contested between two crews from Mana Pasifika with the Mana Menz team (1.55.02) eventually winning over their club rivals Makaira (1.55.27).

Third place was taken out by The Outsiders (2.01.31), Aniuwaru men’s Rough Riderz came in fourth (2.07.04) and Rusty Nails from Hawaikinui came in fifth (2.14.05).

Only one W6 women’s team raced from Porirua Canoe Kayak Club (2.03.16).

There was a combination of W1, W2, sea kayak and surf ski crafts competing in the singles race which was great to see. The eventual winner was Sam Blyde who competed in a surf ski (54.55). The first W1 (rudder) home was paddled by Allan Sullivan from Team Phoenix in Auckland (1.01.58).

After the success of this inaugural event, the Mana Island Challenge 2010 Organising Committee plan to make this race an annual fixture on the paddling calendar. It is hoped that next year’s race will attract even more paddlers from around the country to come and take on the challenge of the local waters around Titahi Bay.

Mana Island Challenge 2010

Race 5, W1 Harbour Series, 15 August, results

The biggest turnout so far, 32 paddlers took to the water for race 5 of the W1 Harbour Series. A big thank you to Chester Burt, Sharlene and Tuhiwai for running this event while Joern is away in Germany.

The start was on the Pauatahanui side of the Mana Bridge, where it was out of the cool Southerly breeze pushing its way through the Porirua Harbour. The course headed around one of the moored boats just off Ivy Bay then headed under the Mana Bridge, down alongside the yachts near Te Onepoto Bay, then around a buoy by the Jetty at Whitireia Polytechnic then back under the bridge to the finish.

The distance was 8 km. In case of any mistakes in the results, please let Joern know.

W1 Harbour Series (III), 4 July, results and current standings

This region rocks! A total of 20 paddlers battled it out today, with 16 OC1 on the start line. The main price and the spot prices to be handed out in September must have some pulling power. Or maybe it was the first glimpse of summer that offered some relief from the night/rain/ice/gale sessions.

The distance was 9.7km (Mana to the point and back to Mana).

Below the results. Many thanks to Tanya for time keeping. If the age group or something else is incorrect please let Joern know at joern.scherzer@gmail.com so that the results can be amended.

A slight change has been made to the points system to make it fairer. Currently, a SNR Master winning her division cannot gain 2 points if there are only two SNR Masters competing, yet she may be faster than another Open and/or Master paddler. For example, looking at the below results, Anita could not get 2 points even though she bet a Master W, Open W and two male Master paddlers. Therefore, those winning in an age group division, i.e. not Open, can now also gain 2 points if that age group paddler is faster than at least two others in either that same division or others in a lower/higher age group. For women there is a special add-on. If they beat a male paddler in the same or lower/higher division, they also gain 2 points. This change takes effect retrospectively, i.e. the points handed out for previous races have been adjusted.

W1 Harbour Series (II), 13 June, results

What a turn-out! 15 paddlers battled it out today, forget the rain and the cold wind, the serious paddlers still turn up, no matter what. That’s the spirit!

By the way, you will be able to catch a glimpse of one of the spot prices before the next race.

The distance was 10.2km (Mana around the reef, to Browns Bay and back to Mana).

Below the results. Many thanks to Selena for time keeping. If the age group or something else is incorrect please let Joern know.

Results: Final Surfski and Waka Ama Series 25 Apr

Hi All,
Thanks for another really good turnout for the last race today, with 35 paddlers taking to the water.
Keep an eye on the www.wellypaddlers.blogspot.com for races coming up over the winter and early spring.
The 2010/2011 Season will start again at the end of September with races running through to the end of April.
Congrats to all who have supported the Series with 12 races over the last 7 months, you are making the Welly Paddlers Series very well known in our Region, around the Country and also around the World thanks to the Internet you also provide a great viewing to the public around the greater Wellington Area and I’m sure you all inspire others to get out and have ago as well……….that’s what racing in numbers does, it creates a great spectacle and you all get noticed.
A few Businesses and People I’d like to thank over the last 7 months who have supported us:
Capital Times
The Wellingtonian
Kapi Mana News
Frampton Signs
Twins Digital (Shelley Bay)
CSTM (custom printed clothing)
Brent Harrison at Bivouac
Sharlene Winiata for doing all the hard yards on the day, while I enjoy the leisurely stuff out on the water.
Most of all Thanks to you the paddlers, without your support we wouldn’t have the good races that we have.
If anyone’s after lightweight buoyancy vests go view our website link for Mocke vests www.paddlekitnz.com (I wear one of them they are lightweight and allow great air flow) and also check out the compact waste belt inflatable vest on www.hutchwilco.co.nz
